Recommended: finding engrossing, time-consuming necessary projects to do at work that don’t require the participation of others. It keeps one off the streets, out of the pool halls, away from bickering and bus routes.
Not recommended: “Suburban Girl” *– a not good movie made from what was supposedly a great chick-lit book, The Girls Guide to Hunting and Fishing. It was adapted, directed, etc etc etc by men, which meant it did not translate. Too bad — I liked Alec Baldwin in it, but it was a loss of a couple of hours of my life. [This was Chick's choice for our viewing pleasure this evening - she'd heard it was not so good, but we were awestruck with just how bad, except for Alec Baldwin, it was, and all the ways it was shot more as 'man-fantasy' than 'chick-empowerment' like the book]
WHY do they make such bad and/or ridiculous movies out of good books? (Not just this one, but when was the last time you saw a really good adaptation? Please share!)
* I don’t think it was quite as bad as “The Number 23″ and another movie Chick made me watch which I have mentally blocked for now, but it was one where you had to talk throughout the whole movie just pointing out everything that was W-R-O-N-G. That’s the only thing that made it tolerable. We took turns predicting the forthcoming lines, and were 100% accurate. Oy!
