to-do: slipping out of the nest

Thursday copy

As a result of some of my inquiries recently, I have 2 outings scheduled for tomorrow. These force me out of the house and into a bit of the world. Hopefully only positivity will be the result(s).

In the morning I will be visiting my doctor to discuss my “tear jerk reaction”. I so hope this can be easily sorted out so I can become someone I can once again count on. It’s hard to dissolve so constantly without control, and that has made these challenging months something ridiculously wet and hard to get traction in.

I’m sure she wants to be sure I’m not looking for a bridge to jump off of — I’m not and haven’t been at all. Some physiological tweak needs to be made, and I obviously haven’t figured it out.

Tomorrow afternoon I have a consultation — and then appointment — with the owner of an ‘edgy’ salon about half an hour from here to discuss the politics of my hair. On my mind — what is the color and the cut saying about me as a potential employee? As much as I have liked the maintenance-free aspect of having finally grown it out into its natural state of mostly silvery-gray (and kind of like the color when I view it objectively), with my white-white skin and lack of aplomb, I don’t carry the look off very well. In some of the recent pix of me I can at a glance be mistaken for Snowy before her latest haircut.

So, half of the consultation will be to discuss grayness and what to do about it if anything. The other half will hopefully result in a becoming, less old-lady ‘do’. We’ll see. I have done SO many ridiculous things to my hair over the decades that I truly learned that THANK GOD hair grows back. But it would be kinda cool if I actually ended up with some solutions for youth-ifying my hair look without climbing onto the expensive maintenance train since frequent repeats are not po$$ible.

Chick and Dex are going to go with me for the hair consult – we’ll do separate vehicles so that they can escape if/when Dex gets his fill of hanging out. He has fair tolerance but the last salon visit with Snowy went on far to long for his pleasure. I’m extremely glad that Chick is coming at least for the planning stage so that she can assess the plan critically and pull me back from any hot pink or turquoise hair extensions or the like. Need to stay on track for the mission: LOOK LIKE A FABULOUS POTENTIAL EMPLOYEE WHO ISN’T FALLING OVER THE HILL. I feel sorry for the lady who must imagineer the change!

And — to be clear, I love the stylist who has taken care of the 3 Girls for the last 3 years. She has given me some of the best hair cuts I’ve ever had. But she is getting ready to move with her family to Hawaii, and I need to take up this change with someone who will be around to see me through this stage.

We’ll just have to see the “After”, eh? I hope it is something striking enough (in a good way) that it will also tickle Snowy when I show her.

Chick has found me a pen to start signing the 500+ cover letters that we will then be stuffing, stamping, and mailing with the resumes, so that will shortly be my next activity.

Tonight I am greatly looking forward to having a ’slumber party’ with Dex. The plan is that he will spend the night downstairs in the den with me, sleeping in his greatly beloved swing next to his thank-God-for-it sound machine. Chick has saved up enough milk for me to give Dex a bottle for his night feeding, and I’ll also do his usual couple-times diaper changes. Chick will finally get a chance to have 1 night to sleep without being on watch — unless we can’t make it through the night without her. Hopefully she can make it through the night without US (well, Dex).

So, a bit of ‘activity’ of the forward-thinking sort here on the Small World. Always a good thing.
