Yes, you may have surmised that the Small World is going to do a little recycling through the solar system and leave the warm climes of the River City in the rearview mirror.
Based on numerous advises of various recruiting types – that in this market employers are not looking outside their own area because of the saturation of available candidates locally to them – we are going to take a leap of blind faith and head north.
We’ve settled on the DC/MD/VA area as our target. There seem to be more possibilities there; I’ve lived in the area before and Chick, though she lived before in NY, has lots of her internet community friends in the area who are expressing delight and support at the thought of her being among them.
We have no place to live and drag with us the trifecta of baggage: no job, bad credit (tho’ my debts are now settled even through these struggles), and critters. So, this is not going to be a fairy tale. And we aren’t naive enough to view it that way. We are getting nowhere even faster HERE, and it has become a waiting game of when will our sweaty hands finally slip to the end of the rope and drop into the abyss. I can’t take the non-activity, the non-working any longer. At least this will be an active verb rather than a passive one.
So… keep watching this space as this particular adventure gets underway. My ‘handle’ for a long time used to be Southern Gypsy, but I haven’t lived up to that moniker in awhile. Think I have this one more move left in me. If we end up in a homeless shelter in downtown DC at the end of it, I’ll try to find a library with computer access and share that life, too.
We’re keeping it real in the Small World.

p.s. All advice, guidance, suggestions gratefully received.

A couple of thoughts:
1) There are a lot more Federal jobs in the area you’re contemplating, if that’s still a goal
2) Even if the “gypsy” part of your handle might stop applying, the “southern” part will, because you’ll still be below the Mason-Dixon line…
Hang in there and best wishes on your upcoming Journey!
